It’s Summer BBQ Time with Degustabox!

This months Degustabox theme is the BBQ ! So summer is finally upon us, we are dusting off the barbecues and stocking up on coals. Alcohol, spices, snacks, drinks, biscuits and sweets are an integral part of our Great British BBQ Season and in this months box there is even a non alcoholic wine for the designated driver! As a blogger I get to sample items from both non alcohol and alcohol boxes so I may have an extra item or two in my box.

Ken has been so happy since this mornings box arrived, it includes lots of goodies he likes and seeing as he bought me two bunches of flowers this morning I can not let him have them!

The Degustabox is geared around a family, it has a great selection of different items each month that a family can share. I love receiving my monthly Degustabox and if I didn’t get one sent me to review I would definitely subscribe. £12.99 monthly is the standard cost including delivery and each box has over £20 worth of goodies. The ‘Good Egg’ Master

When I first saw the Eggmaster I did a little research and found some negative posts. Not so much about the machine, how it works but about the usefulness of the end product. These reviews are a little outdated now My first Impression was how compact this is and that is a big bonus considering how much space is taken up by gadgets in our kitchens. My second surprise was how simple and straight forward it is to use. Within half an hour I had some tasty additions for our Summer evening salad.. Chorizo and pepper and Egg, cheese and mixed peppers.

My conclusion is that it’s a real nifty gadget to have in your kitchen, great for using leftovers and a fantastic tool for creating more interesting lunchbox contents. This would be great for getting children involved creating their own healthy lunches making them envious of all their friends. Buy the Eggmaster online at Amazon £29.99

What a Catch! Big Fish Brand

I am delighted to be chosen to receive a fantastic sample range of the Big Fish Brand. Their range can be found in Farm shops and independents around the country and it’s well worth keeping an eye out for. Having never been a great Fish lover but conscious that I should try more, I was over the moon to receive this delivery.  The first thing I noticed is there was no strong Fish smell which told me my delivery was the most important requirement – fresh and freshly frozen. The Big Fish Brand is a family owned company based in Grimsby on the North East Coast of England.  Their Fish is sourced from Northern waters.

Their salmon fillets are so delicate and fresh with a beautiful colour and flavour . I decided to experiment making a low carb dish with my favourite bread alternative Lo-Dough from http://www.lodough.coMy dish which I have named Finding Dough Ree is layers of exotic mushrooms, Big Fish Brand Salmon Fillets, wilted spinach and served with a lemon and dill sauce. It was a truly delicious dish and all credit goes to http://www.bigfishbrand.co.uk and http://www.lodough.co for such a great mealFancying some avocado this morning but conscious of keeping my calorie and fat intake down I decided to have a ‘mix up’ Big Fish Brand Smoked Salmon 50gm pack is a perfect serving for one. With my salmon I mashed 1/4 avocado and mixed in 3 chopped cherry tomatoes, salt and fresh ground pepper, 1 tsp lemon juice and 1/2 tsp dried coriander. Petit Pois – Going Green In a Day!

Today I decided to empty the freezer. We only have a small freezer space and the 750gm bag of Petit Pois was taking up too much space!

After putting my thinking cap on I made two lovely recipes I share with you below.

The first dish is Petit Pois Hummus and is so delicious and great with fresh crunchy crispbreads.

The recipe is simple and quick. It’s 10 syns for the whole amount on Slimming World and 17 Smartpoints on Weightwatchers. It will serve at least 6 portions

My second recipe which I used the remaining peas for is Minted Petit Pois and Potato Soup with Smoked Bacon.

The whole pan is free on Slimming World and apx 20 Weightwatchers Smartpoints but serves at least 4 and again is lovely

It’s amazing what you can make with a bag of peas!

Lo-Dough Pie Face!

Everyone loves pie! Every slimmer wants pie! Well the good news is, you can have your pie and eat it! Thanks to the amazing Lo-Dough I can now have pie and not have to worry about the calorie count.

This amazing pie was made using just two pieces of Lo-Dough for just 39 calories a piece! Just a fraction of the hit on the daily recommended calorie intake! Lo-Dough is fat free, low calorie, high fibre and protein, gluten free, paleo and vegetarian. It’s incredibly low carb and dairy free!

Just a simple recipe for Lo-Dough

Beef and Onion Pie

2 pieces Lo-Dough

100gms less than 5% fat beef mince

1 small onion finely chopped

1 beef oxo crumbled into 300ml boiling water

1 tbsp Worcester sauce

1/2 tbsp tomato purée

Salt and pepper

1 egg beaten for egg wash

Frylight

Preheat oven to gas no 5

Make filling by sautéing onion in frylight until softening. Add beef meat mince and brown. Add oxo, purée, Worcester sauce and fry for 1 min. Add stock. Bring to boil and then simmer until onion is soft – apx 15-20 mins. Leave for 15 mins to cool slightly.

Place 1 pc of dough onto a oven proof pie plate. Moisten all around the edges with water, then score with a knife to rough up the surface being careful not to tear the dough. Add pie filling to centre of dish and spread to apx 3 cm away from the edge. Be careful not to overfill. Place remaining Lo- Dough on top and keep pressing all around the edges together until it sticks

Cut 3 flutes ( v shapes) into centre of top with a sharp knife and lift the  ‘v’s’ slightly. Brush generously with beaten egg and place in centre of oven until golden brown – apx 15 mins. Serve

The Ramblings of a Kitchen Gadget Addict!

Anyone that watches my Instagram stories will have heard about my kitchen gadget obsession. Is it warranted? I think so! In today’s society anything that makes life easier has got to be good in my opinion! From my simplest gadget – a Joseph Joseph stainless steel garlic crusher to my most expensive Magimix processor both equally make me smile and thankful for their existence.

So when does a kitchen gadget fall out of favour with me? My stick blender for instance is the worst gadget for user satisfaction. It looks good but performs dreadfully, so rarely comes out. It is marked well down on my gadget list, definitely not an all round pleaser! And then there’s my Tefal Actifry which has seen better days. Having had this since almost the launch of the Tefal Actifry it has started to yellow and look shabby.  It still does the same job, it just doesn’t look good, hence, it doesn’t make me happy using it and stays well hidden away out of view of my more ‘pleasing to the eye’ gadgets.

I know, you are probably thinking ‘What a spoilt superficial individual’ but for me – to tick all the boxes of a great kitchen gadget it has to look good. I appreciate the finish, design, durability, and find the aesthetics ignite my passion to use them over and over again. So, instead of using my Tefal Actifry to make low fat chips, stir fries etc I have resorted back to ‘manual methods’ I have seen the new model and think it looks far better in black and will be lots easier to keep looking pristine, so well done Tefal – your advances in design have ensured that your new Actifry is destined to be proudly displayed on any kitchen worktop!
